Mechanical Engineer résumé questions
Should I list every CAD package I have used?
List the two or three you are genuinely productive in and say what you built in them. A hiring manager cares whether you have taken a part from concept to a released drawing in their package, not whether you once opened Inventor. Depth in one tool beats a row of logos.
How do I show design work that never shipped?
Be explicit about the stage reached and why. Twenty-two prototypes across 3 iterations with the design freeze hit early is real engineering even if the programme was later cancelled. Silently implying production is the mistake, since interviewers ask for part numbers.
Do I need to mention standards and tolerances?
Yes, they are the fastest proof of seriousness. GD&T, a tolerance stack figure, a fatigue result or an ISO standard tells a reviewer you have released drawings that suppliers had to work to. Without them a CV reads like coursework, however impressive the projects sound.
